What Makes Lucerne Special

Whenever travelers ask us where to begin their Swiss journey, Lucerne is almost always our top answer. It hits that sweet spot—a town small enough to explore entirely on foot, yet packed with historic charm, world-class dining, and instant access to the High Alps.

Divided by the crystal-clear Reuss River, Lucerne connects its medieval Old Town to modern lakefront promenades with two historic wooden bridges. Whether you're coming for a day tour from Zurich or using Lucerne as your base for a week in the mountains, you'll immediately see why people fall in love with this city.

Our Favourite Spots & Excursions

🌉 Chapel Bridge & Water Tower

Built in 1365, the Kapellbrücke is Europe's oldest covered bridge. Take time to look up as you walk across—the triangular ceiling paintings tell Lucerne's 17th-century history.

⛰️ Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip

Hop on a boat to Alpnachstad, ride the world's steepest cogwheel train (48% gradient!) to the peak, and take the panoramic aerial cable car back down to Kriens.

🚢 Historic Paddle Steamer Cruise

Lake Lucerne boasts five vintage steamships. A cruise to Weggis or Vitznau offers unbeatable views of lakeside villas and sheer cliff faces rising straight out of the water.

🦁 The Lion Monument

Hidden quietly in a sandstone quarry, Mark Twain called this carving of a dying lion "the most mournful piece of stone in the world." It’s an essential 15-minute walk from Old Town.

Plan Your Arrival in Lucerne

Lucerne is the main transport hub for Central Switzerland. If you're arriving by plane at Zurich Airport or Geneva, reserving a private transfer eliminates the hassle of hauling luggage through train transfers after a long-haul flight.

Local Tip: If traveling with kids or heavy mountain equipment, our minivans can drive directly to your hotel entrance—even in Lucerne's car-restricted historic areas.
